Slime Experiments
Did you know that the some slimes (like 'slime blob' below, right) are a type of polymer?
A polymer suggests 'plastic', but polymers comprise a large class of natural and synthetic materials with a number of properties and purposes. 'Slime blob' is a special polymer because it is both a solid and a liquid—put it into a container and it will take the container's shape, as a liquid would, but you can also pick it up like you would any other solid object. Some people think slime feels really gross but I think it's amazing that a few ordinary ingredients mixed together can do such amazing stuff. Follow my instructions and make your own slime—the gooey runny kind on the left or the solid blobby type on the right—have fun!
Gooey, gross, glittery, green slime
An adult’s help, mixing bowl, spoon, measuring cup, Elmer’s clear school glue, bright coloured green paint, glitter, liquid starch (Fabulon)
Pour the whole 147 ml of glue into the bowl.
Add a good squirt of paint, the mix needs to be quite dark as it will get paler when you add the starch.
Shake in lots of glitter and mix well.
Fill 1 cup with liquid starch and gently pour in a small amount at a time.
After each pour stir well before adding more to ensure you don’t go over; I ended up using 2 cups of starch for this but it depends on the brand you buy.
Keep adding starch and mixing until the goo starts to come away from the bowl in clumps.
When you can stretch it in big chunks and it comes away from your hand quite cleanly, your slime is done.
Slime Blob
An adult’s help, borax, 2 plastic cups, water, white craft glue, food colouring
Mix a teaspoon of Borax into a cup of water. Stir (usually doesn't fully dissolve) and place to one side.
Place approx. 2 cm of glue into the bottom of the second cup, add 3 tablespoons of water and mix.
Add a few drops of food colouring to the glue mixture and stir again.
Add 2 tablespoons of the Borax solution to the glue solution and stir well. Mixture should thicken into a slimy goo.
Remove slime from the cup and let sit for a minute and then roll it in your hand, pull it apart and make it into different shapes!
God uses people to do amazing things. People in the Bible like Noah, Moses, Daniel and David were ordinary people living ordinary lives until God chose them for a special purpose. Some of them made mistakes and had many weaknesses, but this didn't stop God from using them. Use your talents for good and ask God to help you in the choices you make—he will use you to do extraordinary things!
